Revenue Cycle Hiring: Four Mistakes That Cost You Twice

August 5, 2026

Revenue cycle is the part of a healthcare organisation where a hiring mistake
charges you twice: once for the salary, and again for the money that quietly stops
arriving. Here are four we see repeatedly.

1. Hiring a coder to run a function

Strong coders do not automatically make strong revenue cycle managers. One job is
accuracy and depth; the other is process design, payer relationships and managing
people through a backlog. Promoting or hiring purely on coding credentials is the
most common way to end up with a technically excellent hire who cannot run the
department.

If you need both, say so explicitly and expect the search to take longer.

2. Screening on software instead of judgement

Naming your system in the job description is sensible. Rejecting everyone who has
not used it is not. Systems are learnable in weeks; understanding why a denial rate is
climbing is not. Treat platform experience as a nice-to-have unless you genuinely
have no one who can train it.

3. Underpaying for the responsibility

Revenue cycle salaries have moved, and remote work means your local candidates can
be hired by organisations several states away without leaving home. A range that was
competitive two years ago may now be quietly filtering out everyone you want.

We would rather tell an employer at the outset that a range will not attract the
person they described than run a search for two months and hand back the same news.

4. Treating culture fit as a soft consideration

Revenue cycle sits between clinical staff, finance and patients, and the job
involves telling people things they do not want to hear. Someone who cannot hold that
position calmly will struggle regardless of technical skill — and this is precisely
what a resume cannot show you.

It is also why we screen for how someone works rather than only what they have
done. Skills get you to the interview; the rest determines whether the hire lasts.

The pattern underneath all four

Each mistake comes from hiring against a document instead of against the job.
Write down what this person needs to have fixed twelve months from now, then work
backwards. It changes the shortlist immediately.
